.au registrations soar to 1 Million!

AusRegistry, the Registry Operator and wholesale provider for all commercial and non-commercial .au domain names, today announced that the total registrations in .com.au, .net.au, .org.au, .asn.au and .id.au would reach the one million mark this month.

AusRegistry's Managing Director, Adrian Kinderis said "The growth of .au is nothing short of astounding. .au has sustained an impressive 25% growth each year for the past 5 years. Australians should be congratulated."

"Since 2002, the total number of commercial .au domain names has risen by over 750,000. This significant growth has been influenced by a combination of factors including reduced domain name pricing, a regulated, governed environment, technical stability, a consistent, high level of customer service and targeted .au marketing campaigns."

AusRegistry is launching a public campaign to highlight the success of the one millionth .au domain name and to raise the profile of the .au namespace. The advertising campaign will incorporate a mix of national press and online advertising and feature a celebratory theme that congratulates all Australians for their support of .au.

Chris Disspain, CEO of auDA, the .au Domain Administrator, concurs that that the domain name industry in Australia has benefited from a combination of the factors described. ".au is highly respected internationally. The domain name policies and consumer safeguards that underpin the .au industry protect the interests of .au Registrants ensuring a level of confidence not seen in countries elsewhere."

Disspain continues, "Australians are incredibly internet savvy and early adopters of technology. The growth in .au domain names is testament to that."

AusRegistry have developed a website, www.mywebname.com.au, which aims to educate Registrants about the benefits of registering a .au domain name. The website has been updated to reflect the 1 Millionth domain celebration and lists a group of participating .au domain name retailers (Registrars).
