Following a competitive tender commissioned by the .au Domains Administration in 2002, AusRegistry was awarded the contract to design, develop and implement a Registry System and associated DNS infrastructure and provide a platform for innovative usage of this technology in the provision of ‘World’s Best Practice’ Registry Services to the .au Domain Administration. This included:
In March of 2011, Australia celebrated 2 million .au registrations as a result of phenomenal year on year growth throughout AusRegistry’s tenure as Registry Operator. In January of 2012, the number of registrations exceeded 2.3 million.
As the current Registry Operator, AusRegistry manages all current and open second level .au Domain Names, including: .com.au, .net.au, .id.au, .asn.au and .org.au. It also manages the restricted government (.gov.au) and education Domain Names (.edu.au).
AusRegistry is responsible for creating and driving the software and infrastructure to ensure the stability and integrity of Internet operations in Australia. This includes running the WHOIS servers within the .au Domain Name, which allow for Domain Name registration details to be searched. AusRegistry also operates the .au primary name server, which is the master name server within the .au Domain Name system zone.
