Unity Registry Announces Bid for .org
June 9, 2002
London/Melbourne/Washington DC - Unity Registry, a new joint venture between UK-based Poptel, registry operator for the .coop global Top Level Domain (gTLD), and Australian based AusRegistry, the registry (wholesale provider) for Domain Names in .com.au, .net.au, .org.au, .id.au, .gov.au, .edu.au and .asn.au, will be launched on Monday 10th June 2002.
The global partnership to create Unity Registry has been formed to bid for the .org Top Level Internet domain. The launch announcement will be made at a meeting in Geneva of major intergovernmental and non-governmental agencies in the .org namespace. This is one of a series of consultation meetings conducted by Poptel on the .org divestiture issue.
Adrian Kinderis Managing Director of AusRegistry said: "This alliance is very powerful. Between Poptel and AusRegistry we run both a new gTLD and a major ccTLD registry. We have successfully transitioned a registry from one operator to another and the technology AusRegistry brings to the table is significant as it utilises the latest in Registry Protocol."
Poptel spokesman Malcolm Corbett added: ".org is an important and valuable part of the Internet. Poptel has a long history of working with not for profit organisations and we have strong support for our proposals from the .org community. With .coop we have proved that we can deliver a first rate registry service. Pooling our knowledge and resources with AusRegistry in Unity Registry is a tremendous step forward."
In addition to their technical capabilities the Unity Registry partners promise to propose an innovative mechanism for user involvement in determining the future direction of the .org namespace.
Speaking from Washington DC David Johnson, well-known in ICANN circles and keen supporter of Unity Registry's bid commented: "Poptel's approach to .org has always seemed the most attractive to me. The new Unity Registry creates a sound technical and operational platform and a strong new gTLD registry competitor. Based on Poptel's deep understanding of the not for profit sector and an imaginative plan for the development of .org, the Unity Registry proposal will set the standard against which other bids will be judged."
