.au healthy despite current economic situation

Melbourne, Victoria - May 27, 2009.

The robust .au domain name industry appears to be defying the current difficult economic conditions.

Adrian Kinderis, CEO of AusRegistry, the Registry operator and wholesale provider for all commercial and non-commercial .au domain names today said "despite the difficult economic conditions both locally and internationally, the .au domain name industry continues to produce solid growth and retention figures."

With over 1.4 million active .au domains currently registered, .au is one of the most widely used country code Top Level Domains (ccTLDs) around the world and according to Kinderis, "this is due to the fact that the local market remains very patriotic towards .au and having a .au domain has become part of the fabric of doing business in Australia. This loyalty delivers the .au industry extremely high levels of trust in the .au brand which is demonstrated in consistently high renewal rates for .au domain names".

The number of .au domains has been steadily building with a 22% increase over the last 12 months and a very healthy 26% average increase per annum over the last 5 years.

Kinderis went on to say, "the combination of strong levels of new registrations and renewals as well as a recent increase in interest from overseas organisations to sell .au domains are strong indicators of a healthy .au market into the foreseeable future. We look forward to continuing our delivery of a world class Registry System that all Australians can be proud of."
